Police investigating shooting near Ignacio

Two victims dropped off at Mercy Regional Medical Center

Law enforcement was investigating a shooting involving at least two victims and several suspects late Thursday in the Ignacio area.

Two victims were dropped off about 8:30 p.m. at Mercy Regional Medical Center, which notified law enforcement of the incident, said Sgt. Steve Reiter, with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

The extent of their injuries was not immediately known; both victims were alive when investigators visited the hospital Thursday night, Reiter said.

Police identified “several suspects” in the Ignacio area and were not looking for additional suspects as of 11:15 p.m., he said.

“We’re not pursuing any suspects or anything at this time,” he said.

Mercy’s emergency department issued “controlled access procedures” for about one hour after the incident, according to an email from hospital spokesman David Bruzzese. He did not explain what emergency access procedures entail.

Multiple agencies were investigating the shootings, including the Sheriff’s Office and the Southern Ute Police Department.

The shootings occurred near Ignacio outside town limits, Reiter said.

He could not speak to a possible motive, including whether the suspects and victims knew each other.
