It seems like we cannot have a local election without a “3B” from the Montezuma-Cortez School Board. There is also a measure from the Mancos School Board.

Read the measures carefully, especially the phrases before the lists:

From the Cortez issue “… as approved by the Board of Education including .”

And from the Mancos measure “…among other things ...”

These open-ended phrases are troubling. While the included lists may be laudable goals, we have no guarantee that they will be accomplished.

Wouldn’t it be nice to also have that guarantee? If the phrase “limited to” was used, I might take a better view. Vote no on both tax issues until we have that guarantee.

Speaking of taxes, we cannot continue to tax and bond our resources, ad infinitum. Many of us are retired, living on a fixed income. That means we don’t get raises, even as all of our expenses continue to rise. We cut back where we can and in some cases do without.

For those of you still in the labor pool, I suspect your wages have not kept pace with the cost-of-living increases, and in many cases you have had either your salaries or your hours cut, or both, and have made the same adjustments as those of us who are retired.

In other words, we prioritize. Why can we not expect those who live off our taxes do the same?

Vote no on both tax issues, and for board members who will have the school districts do as we do.
