On Tuesday, the Cortez City Council will vote on regulations that could affect multiple upcoming construction projects.

The public meeting will start with a workshop at 5:20 p.m. in the Mesa Verde room at City Hall, followed by the main meeting in the council chambers at 7:30 p.m. Major agenda items include a vote on a bid for a waterline improvement project and a firewall upgrade for the city’s computer network. The council will also vote on whether to approve construction of a salt shed near the city Service Center and whether to approve a subdivision on Cedar Street.

Public works director Phil Johnson gave a presentation at the council’s June 13 meeting about the age of the city’s waterlines, some of which were laid in the 1950s and 1960s. On Tuesday, the council will consider awarding a bid to D&L Construction for $594,319 to install new water lines on Balsam Street, Tucker Lane and Center Street this year. Johnson said on June 13 that an upgrade to all the city’s waterlines would be a long-term project spanning several years.

Also on the agenda is a vote on whether to award a bid to Venture Technologies to upgrade the city’s firewall systems, at a cost of $82,218.37 per year for a three-year lease. The award recommendation from general services director Rick Smith states the city’s current firewalls “do not have the capacity to meet the City’s security needs.”

During the workshop, council members will discuss multiple issues, including an early draft of the city’s long-range plan, an update on improvements to the Cortez Recreation Center and the possibility of offering employee discounts to city volunteers.
