Southwest Health System in Cortez has announced the addition of board-certified pediatrician Dr. Maggie Bonilla to its medical staff. Bonilla will work alongside Dr. Moriah Tarpey to serve families in the area.
Prior to the hiring of Bonilla, Tarpey was the only outpatient Board Certified Pediatrician, though SHS’s primary care providers all see pediatric patients, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jennifer Gero told the Journal.
“SHS is focused on recruiting high-quality providers who are dedicated to caring for patients in our community,“ Gero said. ”We are honored to have Dr. Bonilla join our medical staff, helping expand pediatric care and increase access to services.“
Bonilla will see patients on Thursdays and Fridays at Southwest Medical Group Women’s and Family Health, offering comprehensive care for children from birth through young adulthood, SHS said in a news release.
“Her commitment to family-centered care, preventive medicine and patient education makes her an excellent addition to our pediatric team,” Gero said.
SHS shared that Bonilla completed her pediatric residency at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and her medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific Northwest in Lebanon, Oregon.
Before starting her journey through medical school, Bonilla attended Hawaii Pacific University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in psychology. She practiced in Ontario, Oregon and Lander, Wyoming prior to moving to Montezuma County.
She expressed her excitement to live in Southwest Colorado, sharing that she enjoys practicing in rural communities.
“I'm looking forward to becoming part of this community and caring for local families,” Bonilla said. “Southwest Colorado is a wonderful place to raise a family, and I'm excited to call it home.”
According to SHS, Bonilla’s clinical interests include supporting new parents, breastfeeding medicine, preventive care, obesity medicine, mental health and more.
“Compassionate, collaborative and family-centered in her approach to care, Dr. Bonilla strives to meet each child's unique needs while partnering with families to help their children thrive,” SHS said.
Away from the clinic, Bonilla spends time outdoors with her husband, toddler and dogs. Some of her favorite activities include hiking, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and photography.
Appointments with Bonilla at Southwest Medical Group Women’s and Family Health may be scheduled by calling 564-2662.
