Plastic bags letter ‘deserves rebuttal’

Although part of me doesn't want to “honor” a recent, sanctimonious letter to the editor with the headline “Useless drivel, petty piety,” with any acknowledgment whatsoever, ultimately, I feel this arrogant rant trumpeting the futility of the soon-to-be-implemented ban on single-use plastic bags deserves rebuttal.

The gist of the letter is that by advocating for legislation banning plastic bags, we are being duped because there are still so many other forms of single-use plastic being produced.

Freddy, do you honestly think this fact is lost on anyone promoting the banning of single-use plastic? Half of our global annual plastic production is destined for single use. Humans use about 1.5 million plastic bottles per minute. Approximately 91% of plastic is not recycled.

This is a big problem. A soul-crushing, planet-destroying problem. But how does attacking a step in the right direction, even if it is a small step, do anything to help the issue?

Yes, more needs to be done. Let’s work toward a more comprehensive solution instead of mocking those who are trying to do just that.
