Independents mean more choices

Among many discussions about whether or not our elections are fair, most center around the voting process. However, fair elections must begin much earlier than election day. Do you know our choices are purposely limited and often offer no choice at all? In last week's primary, the Democrat and Republican nominees for every La Plata County elected office featured one candidate only.

Executive leadership of local DEM and GOP parties follow the longstanding tradition of pre-arranged party candidates, supporting them through the general election. Contrast that with the independent candidates, who are required to gather hundreds of voter signatures to be included on the November ballot. It’s a lot of work to personally contact a huge pool of citizens, listen to their concerns and enlist their support to be allowed on the ballot along with the parties’ automatic candidates.

It's understandable that you are likely unaware we have three independents working to get their names on the ballot for this year’s election. They've stepped up to challenge political party status quo and offer real choice. Jack Turner (county commissioner), Tiffany Lee (county clerk), and Erin Hutchinson (treasurer) have until July 14 to gather voter signatures to qualify for the election. Any registered voter can sign their petitions regardless of political party.

Please give these independents a chance and sign their petitions. This doesn't obligate you to vote for them, but it benefits all with more choices come November 8.
