Hospice of Montezuma will host an advance directive day planning event at 512 North Broadway on Wednesday, April 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Advance directives are an important tool in ensuring that you get the kind of care you want, eliminate potentials of stress and conflicts and improve peace of mind and outcomes for yourself and for your family,” said Ian Hyde, the event’s host and head chaplain at Hospice of Montezuma.

Hospice of Montezuma is a nonprofit organization, and along with providing hospice care in the county, it has hosted similar events.

“In addition to providing exceptional care for our hospice patients and their families, Hospice of Montezuma also provides a number of free community services and events. We recently hosted a caregiver support program for the community,” said Executive Director Carol Baumgartner.

A number of speakers are scheduled to speak at the April event, including Andrew Cuckie, Edward Jones; Keenen Lovett, Law Office of McCabe, Lovett, McCabe; Dr. Kelly Busby, Bee Healthy Osteopathic Care; Dave Nelson, Disabled American Veterans Association and Southwest Center for Independence and Kinsey Ertel of Ertel Funeral Home.

Speakers will provide attendees with information on how to prepare for end of life decisions. Back row, from left: Rodney Cox, Keenen Lovett and Ian Hyde. Front row: Carol Baumgartner, Dr. Kelly Busby, Nuriya Akers and Dave Nelson.

Important topics regarding advance directives will be discussed, including how to start difficult conversations, meeting financial needs, options for estate planning, making medical decisions, planning for the final season of life and more.

Additionally, free planning tools, lunch and sponsored giveaways will be provided at the event, including a golf cart to be auctioned.

Fundraising events throughout the year help provide funds for the hospice center to continue providing its services.

“To help fund our programs we rely on donations from our community, as well as support for our annual fundraisers,” Baumgartner said. “This year we have the 21st annual Golf Tournament on May 13, 2023, and we are holding a raffle for a 2021 EZGO RXV Electric Golf Car on September 20.”

Tickets are on sale now for the golf tournament in May. Tickets are $100 or six tickets for $500. For more information on the April advance directive event or events later in the year, contact Hospice of Montezuma at 970-565-4400.
