Farms could be more water-wise

I was driving from our home in Dolores to Cortez at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. It was 93 degrees. At least two farms on the west side of Hwy 145 were running upright sprinkler systems. Does any of that water actually hit the ground?

Farmers have always been the best conservationists. Do they not recognize our drought conditions? Do they not care as long as they can use every last drop of their water allotment? In contrast, Bell Farms along that same stretch of highway utilizes a new central pivot low-spray system. Do we need water guardians or better county water management?

Isn't it time to finally recognize the truth? It impacts all of us.
