‘Dinner with Matt Gaetz almost sold out’

Two letters to the editor in July and August are entirely misleading on the role of the local Republican Party.

The number one purpose of the local party is to support local and state candidates. This purpose is supported by the annual Lincoln Day Dinner, with money used first for local candidates and, second, for state candidates. Local parties are required to support all Republican candidates equally. The local party has never sent money to support Donald Trump’s or any other candidate’s legal fees. If you wish to understand the regulation that state parties and candidates must follow, read the "TRACER“ on the Colorado Secretary of State website.

It is laughable when someone says that the “community” does not want someone to speak or be in Durango. I’m sorry, but 20 to 30 showing up to protest or write letters is not the “community.” Now, if a couple hundred to a thousand show up, that will get some attention.

If you don’t agree with the local party, it’s your right to peacefully protest or speak of it. Just like it is our right to have any speakers we want. The fact that the local Lincoln Day Dinner with Matt Gaetz is almost sold out with the limit of 400 attendees speaks for itself. For individual freedom . . .
