In John Lennon’s song “Imagine,” one of the lines is, “Imagine no religion.”. .

Imagine no Spanish Inquisition, where outspoken women who refused to provide sexual favors to priests were burned alive at the stake, and men were tortured to death for anything considered blasphemous by those in power in the church. Imagine no Christian Crusades, where countless people were killed, claiming their god was better than the god of other religions.

We live in a country that was founded by those who left Europe because of religious persecution.

Fast forward to today. There are those in our politics who want to impose their particular religious ideology on all Americans. Lauren Boebert and Shellie Shaw are two of these people who subscribe to evangelical ideology, and who apparently believe that our government and laws should be based on and subservient to their religious ideology.

In Iran today, women are being suppressed and killed by their religion-based government over simply not wearing head scarves properly.

Are we, too, going back to the Dark Ages? Besides women’s rights in this country, what other freedoms will all of us soon lose if these religious extremists are allowed to control our government?
