The 22nd For Pets’ Sake Turkey Trot, a 1-mile fun walk benefiting animals in Montezuma County, is Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 27, at Parque de Vida.
Registration opens at 9:30 a.m. behind the Cortez Rec Center, and the trot starts at 10 a.m. The $25 registration fee includes a commemorative T-shirt. Runners and walkers can register online in advance or in person on race day.
Costumes are encouraged, with prizes for best costume, first and last to finish, and best trick.
Last year, the trot drew about 90 people, and in 2023, about 70 participated. Pets are welcome, with past events featuring turkeys, goats, a hermit crab and more. Last year’s unique animals included a cat and a mini pony among the dogs.
For Pets’ Sake President Lynn Dyer told The Journal during the 2024 event that the money helps spay, neuter and trap feral cats in Montezuma County. As of 2024, the group has treated 63,000 feral cats. The proceeds also help foster kittens and puppies and fund a food program for those who can’t afford to feed their pets.
