Applications are open for the Fall 2025 Citizens Academy, a six-week program that gives residents a practical look at law enforcement. It begins Wednesday, Oct. 15, and runs weekly through Nov. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cortez Police Department, 608 N. Park St.
“This is your chance to step into the shoes of a Cortez police officer and experience the realities of law enforcement from the inside,” the PD said.
Held twice a year, the program covers topics like field sobriety testing, drone and bike patrols, and less-lethal tools such as Tasers.
Participants will learn arrest control tactics, review body camera footage, “dive into the investigative side of policing” with detectives, and tour the Montezuma-Cortez 911 Dispatch Center to observe emergency call handling. They’ll also meet department members and explore their roles.
“Make it a girls’ night, bring a friend, your spouse, or a family member and join us for an unforgettable experience that brings our community and department closer together. We can’t wait to meet you,” the PD said.
The academy is free and open to Montezuma County residents age 18 and older. Seats are limited, so early registration is encouraged.
Applicants must provide their birth date for a brief background check.
