Wanted: A new home for Mancos School of the West

There are about 200 artists and artisans living in Mancos and the surrounding areas. Two years ago, a group of them got together and formed the Mancos School of the West, and prepared to teach fly fishing, blacksmithing, plein air painting, paper cutting, sculpture and much more.

Just call and sign up. But what number do you call? Where is the building? Have you seen a studio, heard anything about a new place for artists? No? Well there is no place.

They are homeless!

There are definitely artists from here and elsewhere willing to teach all of you, but where? Artists usually carry equipment and supplies and need a storage place. The Mt. Lookout Grange has opened its doors to the artists, and so has the library, but neither of them have storage space or an area for many types of equipment. Can you imagine a group of you and your friends learning glass mosaic in the library?

Can anyone out there help? If you have ideas, please contact Patricia Burke or Rena Wilson or email the school at info@schoolofthewest.org.

Grand Summer Nights kicks off

The weather was clear and almost warm for our first fun night. Music from our own Sweetwater Station drifted out along the street from the grand opening of FAD, which was crowded with all of us, curious to explore and admire this beautiful new gallery.

Goodnight Gallery was full as usual, the expanded Heritage Hometown Collectibles didn’t disappoint, Raven House Gallery passed out delicious homemade cake to all who visited, and hamburgers were enjoyed at the Artisans. Art and his sidekick horse Avatar made more than 20 trips across the highway to our new gym, Momentum, and on Sunday, we went back to Momentum and enjoyed mimosas and yummy snacks while we waited in line to sign up. If we all follow through, Mancos will truly be fit! The gym is available 24 hours a day, and trainers are ready to help all who need them.

From now on, Grand Summer Nights will be on the last Friday night of each month, so put us on your calendar. We’ll feature live music, and if it’s warm enough, we’ll have some entertainment on the street.

The next date is Friday, May 27. For more information, call 970-533-1525.

Historical Society yard sale canceled

The Mancos Valley Historical Society’s yard sale was canceled because of the threat of rain. We were fooled, and we apologize. Watch for the next date – it’s a big sale.
