Southwest Health System has hired Dr. Jennifer Gero as the new medical director for the Southwest Walk-in Care clinic at 1413 N. Mildred Road in Cortez.

Gero has provided medical care in the Emergency Department of Southwest Memorial Hospital since April 2020, in addition to mentoring medical and nurse practitioner students.

Gero said in a news release that she was excited to practice in a rural community and care for the local residents.

“I am honored to be part of the Southwest clinic team,” she said. “I love being able to bring over five years of emergency medicine experience to the walk-in clinic, and I love being able to care for all age groups.”

She is board certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and graduated medical school from the University of North Dakota, School of Medicine and Health Science. Gero completed her residency at Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

“Dr. Gero’s leadership of the clinical team at the Southwest Walk-in Clinic is integral to the quality of care.” Jeanette Filpi, Interim CEO for Southwest Health System. “The clinic provides a much-needed service to our community, offering comprehensive walk-in services seven days per week.”

When not providing medical care, Gero likes to hike with her husband in the mountains with their two dogs, “Skippy, a very well behaved red heeler, and Leonardo, a very independent minded malamute.”

Southwest Health System operates Southwest Medical Group Walk-in Clinic.

Providers Dr. Jenny Gero and Dr. Leslie Stanwix, along with physician assistants Lane Shepard, Robert Benjamin, and Crysta Connell, provide medical care at the clinic.

The clinic does not provide ongoing care for patients, but individuals may seek attention when their primary healthcare provider is unavailable. Children over the age of six months may be seen at the clinic. Patients are encouraged to bring a list of their current medications when they visit the center.
