Visitor ‘appalled’ by Cortez Cemetery

The primary purpose of my recent visit to Cortez was to spend time at the cemetery, placing flowers on the graves of parents, uncles and grandparents. I was appalled by the general condition of the cemetery. The grass was not only untended, but it was also almost nonexistent. I understand the drought conditions affecting Colorado. But for maintenance to be so lacking that weeds have taken over the grounds is unacceptable. We were told of problems with a 4-inch water line break that was not repaired promptly. That contributed to the dismal conditions but we have difficulty understanding why the repair was not a priority. We surviving family members have put our trust in the board but have been let down mightily.

Not only are rampant weeds and lack of grass an issue, but the signposts are propped up with stones instead of being installed properly. Trash bins are overflowing. Benches that invite visitors to sit are an eyesore. Most flowerpots are filled with dead plants.

There are also sunken graves with wide cracks undoubtedly attributed to the lack of adequate water. The columbarium is disgraceful. Walkways are cracked and filled with weeds. Benches are peeling and unsightly. The smell from the compost pile at the left of the entrance to this area is nauseating. Not only are grass cuttings mounding but trash is also present.

The only excuse for these conditions is poor maintenance or poorly prioritized maintenance. Please help.
