Vernon Cody has been hired as the new superintendent of Hovenweep and Natural Bridges National Monuments in southeast Utah.

Cody has more than 27 years of National Park Service experience and serves as the chief of facility maintenance at the Flagstaff Area Monuments in Arizona, which includes Wupatki, Sunset Crater Volcano and Walnut Canyon National Monuments. Cody will assume his new role on June 21.

“I have always appreciated and enjoyed southern Utah canyon country and look forward to returning to the area,” said Cody. “I am honored to serve as the new superintendent and to be part of a dedicated team at Hovenweep and Natural Brides National Monuments. I look forward to collaborating with associated stakeholders, tribes and neighbors as we preserve and maintain our national treasures for future generations.”

Cody served as the mechanic supervisor at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and as maintenance mechanic at the Flagstaff Area National Monuments. He has also completed temporary maintenance assignments at Wrangell State Elias National Park & Preserve in Alaska, and Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site in southeast Colorado.

Cody began his National Park Service career as a maintenance mechanic at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah. He earned a degree in construction and architectural design from Coconino Community College.

Cody enjoys spending time with his wife, Gwen, and their two dogs, Chachi and Max. In addition to spending time with his family, his hobbies include trail running, mountain biking, and working on volunteer construction projects.
