Intense rain triggered mud and rockslides Wednesday along U.S. Highway 550 between Silverton and Ouray, causing that stretch of road to be closed through at least Friday morning.
The highway, which includes Red Mountain Pass, closed about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to all traffic, according to a news release from the Colorado Department of Transportation.
“Backcountry recreationists within the closure area are encouraged to shelter in place if possible,” the release said. “Stranded visitors seeking shelter or assistance can contact the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.”
During the closure, motorists may want to consider a westerly detour via Colorado Highway 145 through Telluride. Motorists are urged to avoid rugged off-road, four-wheel drive detours or unpaved “shortcuts” suggested by digital map apps.
Northbound travelers will encounter the closure about 5 miles north of Silverton near Ophir Pass (mile post 75.2).
Southbound travelers will encounter a closure at the Bear Creek Overlook about 3 miles south of Ouray.
This is the second closure for Red Mountain Pass due to mudslides in under a week. The pass temporarily closed Friday night due to another mud and rockslide. in which Initial reports said 4 to 5 feet of rock covered the road.
