Two-vehicle crash injures Cortez woman

Collision happened at Road L and U.S. Highway 491

A two-vehicle crash causing injuries occurred on U.S. Highway 491 and County Road L Thursday about 6:30 p.m. the Colorado State Patrol said.

A woman driving a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck eastbound on Road L failed to yield to southbound traffic on the highway and collided with a Chrysler Seabring , said Sgt. Nathan Lyons of the Colorado State Patrol.

The pickup then flipped onto its side and slid. The impact injured the arm of the pickup driver, identified as Donna Dennison of Cortez.

Dennison was cited for careless driving causing injury, he said.

She was taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital. One of the three occupants of the Chrysler also was injured and taken to Southwest Memorial, said Master Trooper Gary Cutler.

Crews extricated Dennison from the truck by peeling back the roof of the truck, said Cortez Fire Protection District Chief Jay Balfour.

The crash blocked and closed a portion of the highway, Lyons said. Southbound traffic was diverted onto County Roads L and M.

The intersection is known to be dangerous and the scene of prior collisions, Lyons said. Warning signs on the highway alert traffic to the intersection.

The Cortez Fire Protection District, Lewis-Arriola Fire District, Colorado State Patrol, Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office, and Southwest Health System ambulance responded to the scene.
