Three Durango High School cheerleaders opened 2024 by representing the Demons, the city and the United States showcasing their talent overseas.

Luci Rodriguez, Jocilen Thompson and Jorja Thompson performed in London’s New Year’s Day Parade as part of a select group of National All-American cheerleaders identified at varsity spirit summer camps across the country.

“I'm extremely proud of these girls, on and off the mats they are strong leaders who represent our cheer program, the high school, Colorado and America, wonderfully,” said Durango cheer coach Tobi Gillen in a news release.

Rodriguez, Jocilen Thompson and Jorja Thompson performed “Shake It Up” with Varsity Spirit All-Americans in an exclusive performance at Piccadilly.

Since its inaugural parade in 1987, the London New Year’s Day Parade brings in 10,000 participants from the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and beyond.

“It was an absolute honor to have been chosen and we are excited to represent our team, community and Nation,” Jocilen Thompson said in a news release. “There were so many talented athletes it was a great experience to perform with them in such an amazing event.”

Aside from performing in a world-renowned parade, the athletes had the opportunity to meet collegiate cheerleaders and coaches from across the U.S.

“We are honored to provide them athletes a one-of-a-kind opportunity, where they will meet and connect with cheerleaders, dancers, and drum majors from across the United States, as well as be a part of an international and historical parade experience,” said Bill Seely, President of Varsity Spirit, in the release.
