The Bridge Shelter announced on Monday that it will host a public groundbreaking for its new building on Sept. 6 at 9 a.m.

The shelter, which was designed by RMBA Architects of Durango, will be built by Weeminuche Construction at the northwest corner of Empire and Park streets. The public is invited.

The two-story building will house 41 people on the ground floor as well as Day Labor and office space. The second story will house up to 24 formerly homeless people in one- or two-bedroom apartments.

Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2019.

“This facility will be the first of its kind in the state of Colorado,” Deb Keel, of The Bridge’s communications committee, said in a news release.

The Bridge also announced that construction costs have increased.

“We will be kicking off another capital campaign to fund final construction,” Keel said. “We have received a challenge grant of $40,000 and invite you to join us in matching this challenge to complete construction that will meet the needs of so many in our community.”
