Texas woman dies while off-roading outside Silverton

Incident on Corkscrew Pass results in one fatality

A Texas woman died Tuesday while riding an off-highway vehicle in the backcountry of the San Juan Mountains, north of Silverton.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a post to social media on Wednesday that emergency crews responded to the scene at Corkscrew Pass, a popular off-road route off U.S. Highway 550 near Red Mountain Pass.

The Sheriff’s Office said the injured person was met by emergency crews while coming down the mountain in a private Jeep. She was then transferred to an ambulance where her condition quickly worsened and CPR was initiated.

Despite the effort of emergency personnel, the injured person, identified as “Sandy” Anita Posey of Amarillo, Texas, died as a result of her injuries. Her age was not included in the post.

“Ms. Posey was traveling with family and friends, and was the sole operator of a quad-style vehicle when injured,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote. “We are again sadly reminded of the dangers of mountain recreation. Please be careful out there.”
