Police continue investigation after school lockdown

The Farmington Police Department on Friday reported that officers had taken a person into custody in connection with a lockdown at Farmington High School earlier that day.

Farmington police reported that a 17 year-old juvenile has been charged, and he is still in custody. The weapon was a handgun, said police spokeswoman Shanice Gonzales.

As previously reported, spokesman for Farmington Municipal Schools Roberto Taboada said two students reported they saw a peer “flash” a weapon. He could not say what kind of weapon was involved. He said the call came in about 11:50 a.m.

“We have students who reported that they saw one of their peers flash them that he had a weapon,” Taboada said. “He showed them that he had a weapon.”

The police department announced on its Facebook page that the school went into lockdown after noon Friday, Feb. 17, as officers conducted a “sweep” of the school.

A school resource officer was in the building at the time, Taboada said, adding that students remained in classrooms behind locked doors until the lockdown was lifted about 1:30 p.m.

After a search of the buildings, “no subject with a weapon had been found,” Taboada said.

Farmington police are continuing their investigation.
