3:36 a.m.: A deputy responded to the 8000 block of Road 25 and initiated a traffic stop at 1115 E. Main St. in Cortez on a vehicle after observing suspicious driving. The male driver provided registration and a driver’s license but no proof of insurance. Possible drug paraphernalia was reported in the vehicle, and the man was subject to a protection order prohibiting possession of firearms or other weapons. A machete was located between the driver’s seat and door. The man was arrested on suspicion of violation of a protection order.
8:50 p.m.: A deputy responded to the 21000 block of Road G in Cortez after a vehicle fled when emergency lights were activated. A similar vehicle was later stopped. A different male driver said the fleeing vehicle belonged to a friend who texted that he was running from law enforcement while speeding. The man was released after a records check cleared him.
9:10 p.m.: A deputy responded to 400 Railroad Ave. in Dolores for a fraud report. A man said a caller claiming to represent the credit card reader company walked him through resetting the system and running test refunds totaling more than $1,200, leaving the account negative. The card used was prepaid with no way to identify the owner. No suspects were identified.
12:20 p.m.: A deputy responded to the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office, 730 E. Driscoll St. in Cortez, for a report of a license plate theft that occurred days earlier near Hay Camp north of Dolores. The case was closed with leads exhausted.
4:37 p.m.: A deputy responded to 3900 U.S. Hwy. 160 in Cortez for a brush fire. The property owner said a fire started the previous day in a burn barrel for ceremonial use inside a hogan, but embers dumped the next morning, reigniting the fire. The matter was determined not to be criminal.
3:29 p.m.: A deputy responded to Central Avenue in Dolores to enforce a town ordinance on public nuisances involving abandoned vehicles and junk. Multiple vehicles and parts were observed in the backyard, on the hillside and along North Third Street near an unlicensed vehicle repair shop. Investigation continued.
4:06 p.m.: A deputy responded to North Fourth Street in Dolores to enforce the same public-nuisance ordinance. Junk, discarded materials, trailers, appliances and abandoned vehicles, were observed surrounding the property. Investigation continued.
8:45 a.m.: A deputy took a report at the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office, 730 E. Driscoll St. in Cortez, of identity theft and fraud. A woman said someone used her name and Social Security number to attempt to open bank accounts in Florida and obtain insurance. The leads were insufficient to proceed.
7:02 p.m.: A deputy responded in the area of 18396 Colorado Highway 145 in Dolores after a man turned in a heavily damaged cellphone found on the side of Colorado Highway 184. The phone would not power on and was placed into evidence for safekeeping.
2:24 a.m.: A deputy responded to a residence on Road X in Lewis for a structure fire. The homeowner said the fire started near his wife’s oxygen machine in the primary bedroom. He extinguished it and got his wife outside. Fire personnel determined the fire was accidental and related to the oxygen equipment.
11:25 p.m.: A deputy responded to a residence on North Mildred Road in Cortez regarding an assault on ambulance personnel. Medical staff reported a man had spit on them multiple times and attempted to claw another worker during transport. The man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault.
5:46 a.m.: A deputy stopped a vehicle at Railroad Avenue and 15th Street in Dolores after observing it traveling without lights and above the posted speed limit. The male driver could not produce a license, registration or insurance. Records showed his license was under revocation. He was issued a citation for driving under revocation and failure to have insurance.
10:15 a.m.: A deputy responded to the Montezuma County Combined Courts, 865 N. Park St. in Cortez, for a woman already detained by court security on a warrant. She was taken to the Montezuma County Detention Center.
