Sunday, Aug. 20

8:36 p.m.: Deputies responded to a report of stolen license plates in the 24000 block of Colorado Highway 184. A man claimed officers from the Craig Police Department had called him after confiscating a plate registered to his vehicle from a Cortez-registered vehicle they had contacted. The man said he didn’t notice his plates were missing until he got the call, but he thought they could have been stolen while he was at J. Fargo’s or Walmart in Cortez. The rear license plate was still missing.

Monday, Aug. 21

8:05 a.m.: Deputies responded to a report of a vehicle break-in in the 200 block of South Eighth Street, Dolores. A woman claimed someone had taken four dollars in change, a Buddha figure and a Saint Christopher medallion from her vehicle. She also said she had found an audio cable on the driver’s seat that did not belong to her. The case remains under investigation.

9:53 a.m.: Deputies responded to a report of theft in the 700 block of Riverside Avenue, Dolores. A man claimed a revolver had been stolen from his vehicle after he left it unlocked overnight. The case remains under investigation.

4:36 p.m.: Deputies responded to a report of a combative inmate at the Montezuma County Detention Center, 730 E. Driscoll St. A male suspect reportedly threatened and resisted Cortez police officers who were attempting to book him into the jail, leading them to tackle him to the ground. Once he was in a holding cell, the man reportedly banged his head repeatedly on the cell door and hit the window with his arms so hard that it “bowed” outward. Responding deputies and police officers reportedly decided to put the man in a restraint chair for his own safety, but because he was shouting threats at them, they deployed a stun gun to incapacitate him as soon as they opened the cell door. The man was then handcuffed and put in a restraint chair with a “spit hood” over his head. He was medically cleared by personnel from Southwest Memorial Hospital after the stun gun deployment.

9:55 p.m.: A man was turned in by a bondsman at Montezuma County Detention Center, 730 E. Driscoll St., and arrested on a warrant for sexual assault.

Tuesday, Aug. 22

9:41 a.m.: Deputies responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the 24000 block of County Road G.2. A woman claimed her Jeep had been stolen the night before, and that the thief had apparently run over a mailbox on the property where it was parked. The case remains under investigation.

10:07 a.m.: Deputies responded to a report of stolen mail at G-Whil Liquors, 7033 U.S. Highway 160. Several empty envelopes were found opened and lying on the ground on the north side of the building. The couple to whom the envelopes were addressed claimed two of them should have contained checks for a total of $1,500. They also said some of the envelopes would have contained bank and credit card statements with personal information. The case remains under investigation.

3:42 p.m.: A woman was arrested on a warrant at Montezuma County District Court, 109 W. Main St.

4:25 p.m.: Deputies responded to a report of identity theft in the 14000 block of County Road 27. A woman claimed someone had used her social security number to open a “K-Mart” account in Chicago, Illinois, for the amount of $1,540.20, and asked for a criminal report to help her contest the charges. The case remains under investigation.

5:03 p.m.: A woman was remanded from Montezuma County District Court, 109 W. Main St.

5:49 p.m.: Deputies responded to a report of a lost license plate in the 1500 block of Central Avenue, Dolores. A woman claimed her plate had gone missing sometime after Aug. 10, and believed it had come off while she was traveling through a mountain pass.

6:05 p.m.: A man was served with a warrant at Montezuma County Detention Center, 730 E. Driscoll St., for failure to comply on a felony charge.

7:32 p.m.: Deputies responded to a report that someone had shot and wounded a bear at a residence in the 11000 block of County Road 24.4. A man claimed he had shot the bear multiple times with a handgun after it got into his shed and dragged out a bag of chicken feed. A responding deputy found the wounded bear next to a creek near the residence, and killed it with a single shot from his firearm, after a Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer confirmed it probably could not be rehabilitated.

Wednesday, Aug. 23

12:42 a.m.: Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin shot a bear with rubber bullets in the 300 block of South Third Street, Dolores, after he saw it feeding on household trash from several containers that had been knocked over. The bear reportedly ran away to a hillside north of town.

10:13 a.m.: A woman was arrested in the 3000 block of U.S. Highway 160 on a warrant for failure to appear after deputies responded to a report of domestic violence at her residence. Responding deputies reportedly determined the domestic dispute was verbal, not physical.

11:56 a.m.: A man was arrested on a warrant at Montezuma County Court, 601 N. Mildred Road.

8:05 p.m.: Deputies responded to a report of two lost hikers on Forest Service Road 328. Deputies passed on information about them to United Search and Rescue personnel, who found them shortly after arriving in the area. Both hikers were reportedly in good condition, and they refused medical attention.

9:24 p.m.: A man was arrested in the 7000 block of County Road 25 on four warrants for failure to appear and failure to comply, after the car in which he was a passenger was pulled over for failing to slow down for deputies collecting a dead deer from the road.
