Rep. Jeff Hurd should take a lesson from Montezuma County Commissioner Jim Candeleria. Mr. Hurd canceled a meeting with the county commissioners Aug. 27 when an aide had a medical emergency. Mr. Candeleria had to announce the cancellation to a crowd of frustrated citizens who hoped to speak to Mr. Hurd. Mr. Candelaria took questions, responded respectfully, tried to answer what he could, and was honest when he couldn't answer. He modeled what a public servant owes his constituents.
Many people expressed doubts about Mr. Hurd's excuse. I do not doubt the reason or blame him for canceling. But he is responsible for the level of distrust his constituents feel. He has created this distrust. Commissioner Koppenhafer revealed Mr. Hurd originally asked for a private dinner with the commissioners in Mr. Koppenhafer's home – further proof of Mr. Hurd's avoidance of his constituents.
Republican Rep. Mike Flood from Nebraska has held town halls in his district and says, “You have to put yourself in the town square if you want to be a member of Congress.” In contrast, Mr. Hurd found time for a trip to Israel but not to meet with citizens of his district.
I know there are diverse political views in this district. There are many people who agree with Mr. Hurd on many issues. I respect them and their opinions. But I do hope that we can all agree that a public official should be expected to listen to all of his or her constituents.
