Public Lands Day event planned for Sand Canyon

The Journal

The San Juan Mountains Association in partnership with Canyons of the Ancients National Monument will host a National Public Lands Day Event on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Sand Canyon Pueblo trailhead in Cortez.

Volunteers are needed for light trail maintenance on the first 2 miles of the upper trail and on the interpretive trail to the pueblo. Volunteers should wear work clothes and be prepared to hike and carry tools. The project is rated easy to moderate.

All registered participants will receive lunch and a T-shirt. Mark Varien, from Crow Canyon, will give the volunteers a tour of the pueblo after the event.

Sand Canyon Trail is 6.5 miles through a red rock canyon connecting Sand Canyon with Upper Sand Canyon Pueblo.

Contact kathe@sjma.org to register and receive directions to the site.
