The Durango Police Department is searching for a man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman earlier this month in downtown Durango.

The woman was on vacation June 3 in Durango and saw the man in Rose Duds, a consignment shop on Main Avenue. The man is suspected of following the woman from the store to her car where he inappropriately touched her over her clothes in an intimate area, said Durango police Cmdr. Jacob Dunlop.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 50s wearing feminine attire, including a chest piece in the form of breasts supported by a bra.

He is about 6-feet or 6-foot-3-inches tall, and may have gray hair worn in a ponytail, a mustache and a light beard.

On June 8, the alleged victim shared details of the incident and the store’s security footage to a 1,500-person Durango Facebook group, asking for help identifying the man. On June 24, the Durango Police Department made a similar post on its Facebook page.

“We’ve got some leads that we’re actively investigating to identify the suspect,” Dunlop said Friday.

Police believe the man is a Durango resident who has frequented local businesses in the past. Community members may have spotted a person matching the description, but police have not been able to track down the individual. Police have not positively identified any suspects, Dunlop said.

Community members who recognize or have information about the individual are asked to call the Durango Police Department by calling non-emergency dispatch at 385-2900.
