Tuesday, March 24

1:30 p.m. A man who was not allowed to enter City Market because of a trespass ban apparently had concealed a bottle of Listerine in his pants while shopping. Employees retrieved other items he was carrying, but the man would not release the bottle in his pants and left the store. Security video was collected. Another officer made contact with the man in the 10 block of North Harrison Street. The man appeared to be highly intoxicated despite an order prohibiting him from possessing or consuming alcohol. The man was handcuffed but allegedly resisted arrest when officers attempted put him in the patrol vehicle. An officer delivered a knee strike to help him comply. The man was taken to the hospital for medical clearance before being transported to the jail and booked.

7:44 p.m. A fight was reported in the area of the Centennial Park restrooms. The reporting person stated three Native American men were beating up another man and one man in a white T-shirt was kicking the man on the ground. When the officer arrived, he observed several individuals, including one who matched the given description. The officer attempted to reach the man, but the man walked away. Another officer arrived and made contact, but the man was uncooperative and tried to strike one of the officers and was physically taken to the ground. The man allegedly resisted being handcuffed. He was taken to the hospital for medical clearance, then transported to jail. The other parties present at the park would not discuss the fight and were told to separate and leave.

8:27 p.m. An officer responded to Best Western Turquoise, 535 E. Main St., for a report of a woman hitting her son. The son stated he and his mother had gotten into a fight, and the officer observed what appeared to be teeth marks on his arm. The mother stated the son had pushed her down, causing injury. Neither could say who started the fight. The mother appeared to be intoxicated despite having an order against possessing or consuming alcohol. She was taken to the hospital for medical clearance, then to jail. No one was charged for the fight.

Wednesday, March 25

12:11 a.m. An officer made contact with a man carrying a bike in the 30 block of North Linden Street. The man stated he found the bike lying in the parking lot of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 110 W. North St., and intended to turn it in to the police. The officer took the bike and turned it into the Cortez Police Department. The officer then found another bike lying on the corner of North Chestnut Street and West North Street turned it in at the police department.

11:25 a.m. A man approached an officer in the 600 block of North Park Street about a theft of three wooden panel cedar fence sections that had occurred in the 400 block of South Cedar Street. The panels were last seen at 7 p.m. March 24 and were noticed to be missing at 8 a.m. March 25. Police said they had no leads or suspects.

11:41 a.m. While traveling east on East Montezuma Avenue, an officer observed a maroon SUV stopped to turn left onto North Park Street. The vehicle accelerated and turned left, causing another vehicle traveling westbound to brake to avoid hitting the vehicle. The officer initiated a traffic stop and observed a strong odor of alcohol when the female driver lowered the window. The woman admitted she did not have a driver’s license and denied consuming any alcohol that day. Two males were also in the vehicle and the woman stated they were intoxicated and needed a ride home. Dispatch confirmed the woman did not have a valid driver’s license and had an order against possessing or consuming alcohol. Multiple containers of alcohol were observed on the vehicle’s floor. The woman was asked to step out of the vehicle and perform roadside maneuvers. She was unwilling to take a portable breath test and was taken into custody. The male passengers were asked to get out of the vehicle so it could be secured. Photos were taken of the alcohol containers. The woman was taken to the hospital for medical clearance before being returned to the jail and served with a summons.

12:16 p.m. An officer responded to the courts building, 865 N. Park St., for a woman with a warrant. The woman was already detained by the courts. She was transported to the jail and served with a warrant.

8:16 p.m. Officers responded to a disturbance in the 500 block of North Washington Street. A shirtless man was sitting on the curb and stated his wife had called the police because she knew he was “dealing with the courts.” An officer asked the man if he had any weapons, and he responded he did not. The officer later noticed a pocket knife in the man’s front jeans pocket and asked him to place it in a mailbox. The man complied, also placing metallic brass knuckles in the mailbox. Both the man and woman gave statements about the fight, and the statements and physical evidence indicated the man had been the aggressor. The man was taken into custody and another officer assisted the woman in filling out a summary and took photos of her injuries and the damage to the home. Photos were taken of the man’s injuries and he was transported to the hospital for medical clearance before being taken to the jail issued a summons.

Thursday, March 26

8:34 p.m. An officer responded to a report of shoplifting in the 400 block of East Main Street. A Native American or Hispanic man was reported to have run west toward a nearby restaurant. The man was not found, but surveillance footage was reviewed March 27. Several men were observed in the store, including one unidentified man taking two bottles of brandy and leaving the story without paying. Intent of the other men could not be determined. No charges were filed.

8:44 p.m. While searching for a shoplifting suspect in the 500 block of East Main Street, an officer observed a hatchback-style vehicle traveling east at a high rate of speed. The officer followed the car, pacing it at 70 mph in a 25 mph zone. The officer initiated a traffic stop in the 10 block of South Maple Street. The male driver appeared intoxicated and stated he did not have a driver’s license. He d performed roadside maneuvers and a voluntary breath test. He was transported to the police department and given a summons. The driver was cited and released to a sober, licensed driver due to pandemic-related tightened restrictions at the detention center.

Friday, March 27

1 p.m. An officer responded to the front lobby of he police department in regards to found property. A city employee turned in a gray Samsung tablet that had been found near the pavilion of the Rec Center on March 26.

5:17 a.m. A moped was reported stolen in the 300 block of East Second Street. The reporting person believed a woman had stolen it, but did not want to press charges initially. At 5:20 p.m. the same day, the man said he did want to press charges and believed the moped as in Mancos. The vehicle was reported to NCIC/CCIC as stolen and Mancos Marshall’s Office was notified.

7:19 p.m. An officer responded to a report of trespassing at City Market and the store advised they wanted to press charges. A City Market security guard stated the man had attempted to take a can of alcohol and then left the store after employees observed him. The male subject was located and cited for trespassing. The man crumbled the citation and threw it on the ground.

10:07 p.m. An officer responded to a report of a male lying on the sidewalk in the 300 block of South Washington Street. The man was contacted and appeared to be intoxicated despite an order against possessing or consuming alcohol. The man was taken into custody and transported to the jail where he refused a portable breath test. He was then transported to the hospital for medical clearance before being taken back to the jail and served with a summons.

Saturday, March 28

4:24 p.m. An officer responded to a report of property damage in the 20 block of North Beech Street. The homeowner stated a man was yelling at a woman in front of his house and banging on the front door. The homeowner asked them to leave and tried to assist the man, who appeared to be intoxicated, but the man reportedly became combative and fell on the front steps. The man eventually left. About midnight, the homeowner heard something breaking in front of his house. He and his roommate observed the same man from earlier in front of his truck. The man was yelling and cussing and he walked away. About 2 a.m., the homeowner observed the same man rifling through his truck and told him to leave. The next day, he saw the windshield of his truck was broken and told the officer he wanted to press charges. The suspect could not be located.

Sunday, March 29

1:42 p.m. Officers responded to a shoplifting complaint at Walmart. Two men attempted to conceal unpaid for merchandise inside other items. One man left the store prior to any purchases being made. The other man’s card was declined, and store associates saw the concealed items and reported them. Both men were issued summons and trespass notices. Surveillance and cellphone footage were collected.

Monday, March 30

11:12 a.m. Shoplifting was reported in the 800 block of South Broadway. A man took a case of beer and left in a blue sedan. Video footage was collected, but the man was not identified.
