Wednesday, July 12

12:47 a.m.: Police responded to a report of criminal mischief at Manaugh Elementary School, 300 E. Fourth St. The outside of a window was broken, causing about $200 in damage. The case remains under investigation.

11:30 a.m.: A female employee was arrested at Midas Auto Service and Tires, 244 E. Main St., on a warrant for failure to appear on a local misdemeanor charge.

3:53 p.m.: A man was arrested in the parking lot of Front Row Seat, 610 E. Main St., on two warrants for failure to comply on La Plata County misdemeanor charges. He was medically cleared at Southwest Memorial Hospital before being taken to jail, due to severe intoxication.

8:01 p.m.: A man was arrested in City Park, 802 E. Main St., on a municipal warrant for failure to appear.

Thursday, July 13

12:08 a.m.: Two men were arrested in the 1800 block of East Main Street on suspicion of DUI and violation of bond conditions respectively.

6:40 a.m.: A man turned himself in at Montezuma County Detention Center, 730 E. Driscoll St., and was arrested on two warrants for failure to appear and failure to comply.

8:28 a.m.: A woman was served with a warrant for failure to appear on a local misdemeanor charge at Montezuma County Detention Center, 730 E. Driscoll St.

8:43 a.m.: Police responded to a report of criminal mischief in the 400 block of South Madison Street. A man reported someone had painted graffiti in several places on his fence. Responding officers found several more instances of graffiti on the street, some of which appeared to be the symbols of two separate gangs painted over each other. The case remains under investigation.

4:30 p.m.: A man was arrested at the Cortez skate park, 425 E. Roger Smith Ave., on suspicion of shoplifting, an open container violation and possession of alcohol in the park. Safeway employees reported he had stolen two 12-packs of beer from the store, and Beall’s Department Store employees claimed he had stolen some clothing. The suspect was medically cleared at Southwest Memorial Hospital due to severe intoxication.

3:30 p.m.: A man was arrested in the 300 block of West Fifth Street on suspicion of menacing and resisting arrest. An employee with the Cortez Housing Authority claimed a man had shouted threats at him while he was working near an apartment building. When officers contacted the suspect, he reportedly shouted profanity and racial slurs at them and led them on a brief foot chase when they tried to handcuff him.

5:53 p.m.: Police responded to a report of assault near The Pie Maker, 17 N. Harrison St. Witnesses claimed a woman had hit and scratched her ex-boyfriend and pulled his hair while arguing with him about a sweatshirt he had borrowed from her. Police were not able to locate the woman immediately.

Friday, July 14

1:58 a.m.: A man was arrested in the 1800 block of East Main Street on suspicion of DUI, DUI per se, driving under restraint, driving without proof of insurance and weaving after his vehicle reportedly collided with the curb several times. He was medically cleared at Southwest Memorial Hospital due to severe intoxication.

10:19 a.m.: A man was issued a summons on suspicion of trespassing at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St.

9:55 p.m.: Police responded to a report of an animal bite in the 500 block of West Second Street. A woman claimed she had been bitten by a Chihuahua after the young child who was walking it let go of its leash. Responding officers forwarded the report to the animal control department.

Saturday, July 15

12:13 a.m.: A man was arrested in the 700 block of East Third Street on two warrants for a local felony and a local misdemeanor after the vehicle in which he was a passenger was pulled over for failing to use a turn signal.

7:44 a.m.: Police responded to a report of theft in the 1100 block of South Market Street. A woman reported she had found several items in the street that looked like they may have been dumped from a vehicle. A man who lived nearby claimed some of the items, which he said had come from a backpack he kept in his vehicle. He later told police that the backpack itself, which was valued at $50, was missing, along with a government identification card. He also said there was no sign of forced entry on his vehicle. The case remains under investigation.

11:59 a.m.: Police responded to a report of theft in the 500 block of East Fourth Street. A man claimed his wallet, which contained a permanent residency card valued at $580, and his iPod, valued at $400, had been stolen from his unlocked vehicle the night before. The wallet was recovered in a nearby field with all its contents intact. The case remains under investigation.

1:10 p.m.: Police responded to a report of theft at the Cortez Police Department, 608 N. Park St. After a man turned in an identification card and a health card he said he had found lying in the street, officers matched them to a woman who said her wallet had gone missing from her vehicle the night before. The wallet itself, which the woman said contained $32 in cash and several credit cards and membership cards, was not recovered. The case remains under investigation.

3:51 p.m.: Police responded to a report of theft in the 500 block of West Fourth Street. A man reported his wallet and checkbook had been stolen from his unlocked vehicle between 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. the previous night. He said he had later found his wallet and checkbook, but his debit card and $75 in cash were missing from the wallet. Responding officers said the incident was likely connected to several other recent reports of vehicle break-ins. The case remains under investigation.

7:34 p.m.: A man was arrested outside the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., on suspicion of violating bail bond conditions.

11:31 p.m.: A man was arrested in the 500 block of East Montezuma Avenue on suspicion of DUI, driving under restraint and disregarding a stop sign.

Sunday, July 16

2:48 a.m.: A man was arrested in the 100 block of North Adams Street on suspicion of false imprisonment, obstructing government operations and domestic violence after a child reported her parents were fighting. A woman claimed her boyfriend had physically restrained her in their bedroom and then in the bathroom, not allowing her to leave until he heard police sirens. When officers arrived on the scene, the suspect was reportedly fleeing the house. One officer claimed he ran straight toward him, disregarding orders to stop, leading the officer to use his stun gun on him. No serious injuries were reported.

2:42 p.m.: A woman was issued a summons on suspicion of shoplifting at City Market, 508 E. Main St. Employees claimed she had reached into several containers at the salad bar and eaten food without paying, and that she had stolen a macaroni salad valued at $5.99.

5:11 p.m.: Police responded to a report of trespassing at Southwest Memorial Hospital, 1311 N. Mildred Road. Hospital staff reported an emergency room patient had aggressively grabbed a staff member by his shirt, refused all medical help, refused to sign a refusal form and was refusing to leave the building. Police escorted her out of the building to be picked up by her husband but allowed her to keep her hospital gown, which she reportedly refused to take off. The woman reportedly threatened to sue the responding police officers.

7:34 p.m.: A woman was arrested at City Market, 508 E. Main St., on suspicion of shoplifting. Store employees claimed she had tried to steal a shopping cart full of food, flowers, beauty products, cleaning supplies and socks, valued at $408.90 total. After being arrested, she reportedly slipped one of her hands out of the handcuffs and removed her pants. She reportedly apologized and said she was dealing with some difficult personal issues.

8:16 p.m.: Police responded to a report of theft in the 400 block of South Valley Road. A woman claimed her son’s iPad had been stolen from her unlocked vehicle sometime between 8 a.m. the previous day and 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Monday, July 17

10:49 a.m.: A woman was arrested at Southwest Memorial Hospital, 1311 N. Mildred Road, on suspicion of trespassing. Hospital staff reported that she had entered the emergency room complaining of mental health issues, but when mental health staff said she would not be admitted to a facility, she refused to leave the hospital. The woman reportedly said she would rather go to jail than go home.

4:14 p.m.: A woman was arrested in the 200 block of Piñon Drive on a warrant for failure to appear on a local misdemeanor charge.

7 p.m.: Police responded to a report of criminal mischief in the 500 block of South Madison Street. A woman claimed someone had sprayed graffiti on buildings on her property, causing about $100 worth of damage.

8:07 p.m.: A woman was issued a summons on suspicion of shoplifting at Walmart, 1835 E. Main St. Store employees said she had tried to steal diapers, laundry detergent, pajamas and pants, worth $32.39 total.

Tuesday, July 18

1:13 a.m.: A man was arrested in the 800 block of Brookside Drive on suspicion of third-degree assault, criminal mischief and domestic violence. A woman claimed her boyfriend had thrown a marijuana pipe at her twice, held her by her neck against a wall and tried to hit her, leading her to hit him with a lamp and kick him in the stomach. She said this was the latest in an ongoing pattern of abuse.

11:38 a.m.: A man was arrested outside Dolores State Bank, 744 E. Main St., on a warrant for failure to comply on a local misdemeanor charge.

2:19 p.m.: A man was cited for a dog at large violation outside Montezuma County Court, 601 N. Mildred Road. He was reportedly playing “fetch” with a dog outside the courthouse in violation of the rules, and when an officer approached him, he reportedly swore at him and told him to give him a ticket.

2:34 p.m.: A woman was arrested at Montezuma County Court, 601 N. Mildred Road, on two warrants for failure to appear on local misdemeanor charges.

3:31 p.m.: A woman was arrested in Centennial Park, 800 E. Montezuma Ave., on three warrants for failure to appear on local misdemeanor charges.

6:42 p.m.: A man was arrested in the 400 block of South Cedar Street on suspicion of felony menacing after witnesses reported he had threatened several people in a residence with a sword after becoming angry about the King Kong movie that was playing on TV.

7:01 p.m.: A man was arrested outside Walmart, 1835 E. Main St., on two warrants for failure to comply on local misdemeanor charges.
