Throughout the girls’ high school golf season, Montezuma-Cortez High School sophomore Kiselya Plewe was nothing short of spectacular winning six regular season events in which she competed.

Now, thanks to another solid round, the super-sophomore has been crowed West Region Champion.

Competing at the Western Region Championship on May 6, Plewe was completely dominant, firing an even-par round of 72 to finish first overall.

Appearing completely in control of a difficult course at Monument Desert Golf Club, Plewe opened with a birdie and never looked back.

After finishing the front-nine one over par, Plewe played one-under par on the back nine to win the tournament by six strokes over Montrose High School’s Chelsea Peterson.

“My goal was to play solid enough to get to state,” said Plewe. “I definitely wanted to win (Regionals), and I knew that I could. I just went out there and played solid.”

Now preparing for her second state tournament in as many years, Plewe is hopeful that she can improve on her 11th-place finish at the Colorado State Tournament last year.

“Obviously, I want to do better than I did last year,” said Plewe. “I think I’ve worked hard enough.”

Because M-CHS does not have a girls’ golf team, Plewe plays for a Dolores High School team, which, in its second year of existence, has vastly improved.

As a team, Dolores High School finished 11th overall in the 14-team tournament thanks to solid rounds from Plewe, Keyana Matteson and Abigail Smith.

My teammates were awesome,” said Plewe. “They are a couple of my really close friends and they’ve improved so much.”

This year’s 4A state tournament will take place at the Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs, May 19-20.
