Photo: The shortest day

The Mountain Thyme Sundial casts its morning shadow Thursday at the Durango Public Library. Thursday was the winter solstice, the day with the least amount of daylight in the Northern Hemisphere. From here on out, daylight hours will increase each day until the summer solstice on June 20, when the Southern Hemisphere will again receive more direct sun. (Shane Benjamin/Durango Herald)
