‘Permanently protect Dolores River Canyon Country’

As an organization deeply invested in connecting young people with the natural world, Deer Hill Expeditions fully supports protecting the Dolores River Canyon Country in western Colorado.

This is not just a beautiful landscape, it is the lifeblood of businesses like ours. Deer Hill was founded on the idea that through pushing oneself to meet the challenges posed by expeditions into the wilderness, we discover so much about who we are and what we are capable of. Experiences in the natural world help us reach our full potential. Our youth greatly benefit from their connection to sunshine, dirt, fresh air and adventure.

Without our public lands, we would not be able to offer these life-changing opportunities to youth from all walks of life. The successes of our participants and of businesses like ours hinge on continued accessibility to our magnificent public lands.

Designating the northern reaches (Mesa and Montrose counties) of the Dolores River Canyon Country as a national monument will perfectly complement the proposed National Conservation Area here in the south. Combined, these protection tools will enshrine public access, ensuring that residents and visitors can enjoy these treasures for generations.

As interest in outdoor recreation soars across Colorado, a national monument designation would enable land managers to better prepare for growing visitation by providing amenities and access, while at the same time safeguarding sensitive ecosystems and cultural resources.

I urge our Colorado elected officials to ask President Joe Biden to designate and permanently protect the Dolores River Canyon Country.
