Parque de Vida hosts Cortez CX

Over 70 competitors ride in sixth race of cyclocross series

Parque de Vida was once again the host site for the sixth race in the Durango Performance Center 4 Corners Cyclocross Series.

On Saturday, there were over 70 competitors who traversed the difficult course.

Paul Adams and Eric Cheever, of Cortez, enjoyed the challenging course.

“The grass is really thick, which makes it tough,” Adams said. “There are some really tough run-ups and some good challenging sand sections, so it’s really diverse as far as a cyclocross race goes. It’s just got all of the aspects that a cyclocross race should have.”

“It’s a diverse course,” echoed Cheever. “There are some run-ups and challenging sections by the BMX course. I think the course flows really well overall.”

Adams and Cheever were two of the five local riders sponsored by Kokopelli Bike & Board, along with Rex Robichaux, Jeff Organ and Sean Fitzgerald.

Cheever finished ninth in the Men’s B division, Robichaux was 11th, Adams 13th, Organ 14th and Fitzgerald finished 17th.

Scott Newton, sponsored by Poison Spider, won the men’s B division; Keegan Swenson, riding for Cannondale, won the Open Men’s division; Frank Mapel, sponsored by Stan’s Masters, finished first in the Men’s 35+ group; Scott Dalhberg, riding for Hassle Free Sports, won the 50+ division; and Sofia Gomez Villafane, of the Fort Lewis Cycling team, won the Open Women’s division.

Dave Hagen, director of operations for the Fort Lewis College Cycling team, praised the Cortez Parks and Recreation Department for their help organizing the event.

“Cortez Parks and Rec was amazing,” he said. “Their staff came out and helped us for a couple of hours on Friday to set up the course and get traffic control in place. They helped us out immensely.”

There are two races remaining in the 4 Corners Cyclocross Series: Dec. 12 at FLC Stadium in Durango and Dec. 19 at Parelli Ranch in Pagosa Springs.
