The Andrew Gulliford Program will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21 at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St.

Dr. Andrew Gulliford, professor of history and Environmental Studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, will lecture on “Hitting the Trail with Lewis & Clark.” Gulliford has led Lewis and Clark tours by canoe and horseback for the Smithsonian Institution in Montana and Idaho and by cruise ship up the Columbia and Snake Rivers in Oregon and Washington for the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

He will show slides of Lewis and Clark campsites and talk about the terrain and environment through which Lewis & Clark made their epic 8,000-mile journey. Gulliford will pay particular attention to Lewis and Clark and native nations as well as environmental change in the West. He will discuss the wet winter at Fort Clatsop, preparing for an expedition, and bears, bullets, and babies.

Gulliford’s article “Hitting the Tourist Trail with Lewis and Clark: Issues of Interpretation and Preservation” was published in Lewis and Clark: New Essays by the University Press of California.
