New and expanding businesses on Cortez council agenda

Tuesday meeting to include three public hearings

Several businesses hoping to move into Cortez or expand their operations will bring their plans before the city council at its 7:30 p.m. meeting on Tuesday.

The agenda includes a public hearing for a possible liquor license for the new Mi Mexico Restaurant, which is moving into the old Beny’s Diner location on 550 S. Broadway.

The council will consider approving the sale of real estate to Montezuma Partners LLC for commercial purposes and a site development plan for an expansion to the Herbal Alternative dispensary.

The plan to add another grow operation to Herbal Alternative was recommended for approval by the Cortez planning and zoning commission at its May 2 meeting, but must receive final approval from the council before the property owners can move forward.

The council also will consider approving a first reading of an ordinance that would sell the old City Hall on 210 E. Main St. to the Piñon Project.

If the ordinance is approved, the council will schedule a public hearing to discuss the sale agreement, in which the Piñon Project would buy the building for $300,000 with a $60,000 down payment.

The council meeting will start with a workshop at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, where council members will discuss a possible inventory of historical buildings in downtown Cortez, building safety month and a possible lease of 1,000 acre-feet of water to the Dolores Water Conservancy, an item that will also be on the main meeting agenda.
