MCHS seniors celebrate final week with graduation walks, ceremonies

District to host informational meeting for new online school option

Montezuma-Cortez High School seniors are wrapping up their final school year with a series of end-of-year events that will lead up to commencement on May 21 at Panther Stadium.

The celebrations begin Monday with a graduation walk at 9 a.m. at Lewis Arriola Elementary School. On Tuesday, baccalaureate is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the MCHS auditorium.

Wednesday features multiple events. Graduation walks are set for 9 a.m. at Kemper Elementary and Mesa Elementary and 10 a.m. at the middle school. Seniors will gather for a picnic at 11 a.m. on the MCHS Soccer Field, complete with food trucks. The food truck options include Chuckwagon, Sweetwater Gypsies Pizza and Catherine’s Creations for dessert. The day will conclude with the Academic Awards Ceremony at 7 p.m. in the MCHS Auditorium.

May 21 is the last day of school for freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Seniors planning to walk at commencement will be required to attend a graduation practice at 10 a.m. at Panther Stadium, followed by the graduation ceremony at 6:30 p.m.

Looking toward the 2026-27 school year, the district will be holding an informational meeting about its new flexible learning options on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the MCHS auditorium. At this informational meeting, parents and guardians will learn about the options for their students when it comes to learning in person versus online, as well as hybrid options.

With the new online program, students can opt for flexibility while still receiving full support and resources from the district. They will be eligible to participate in sports, ,National Collegiate Athletic Association-certified courses and an MCHS diploma upon graduation, and more.

A goal of the program is to bring back students who have previously enrolled in online schools elsewhere.
