In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, there will be a walk on the Fort Lewis College campus beginning at 12:15 p.m. at the clock tower. Participants will meet with members of the Black Student Union in the student union building for coffee and hot chocolate after the walk.

Community members are encouraged to attend a viewing of the movie “Selma,” which is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by King.

The movie will be shown from 6-8:30 p.m. in the Vallecito room. Community members and FLC students will speak before the showing of the film.

The holiday weekend is expected to bring an influx of travelers to the Durango area.

Lodging at Purgatory Resort was at capacity for the three-day weekend, said Theresa Graven, spokeswoman for the resort. In addition to it being a busy travel weekend, snow is in the forecast, which will bring additional skiers and snowboarders, she said.

The resort reminds people to drive safely, carpool if possible, abide by the skier code and have a partner when skiing through the trees. Graven reminded locals that Hesperus Ski Area is open, which includes night skiing.

As of Friday, Purgatory passes were selling for $135 Saturday, $123 on Sunday and $109 for Monday.

“It’s going to be a busy weekend, which is good for everyone,” Graven said. “But if there’s anyway to remind people to just take it easy on the hill when we’re busy, especially with out-of-town skiers who aren’t skiing as much as we all are here; it’s just a good reminder to everybody to take it easy and live to ski another day.”
