Mancos Melt and other events to heat up town in spring

Creative District announces Burning Man theme

The ninth annual Mancos Melt will have a more artistic spin, according to organizers from the Creative District.

Every March, Mancos celebrates the beginning of spring with the Melt, a townwide event that traditionally includes a golf tournament and bed races. Last year, the event was circus-themed, so participants were encouraged to dress like clowns or acrobats. This year, will be the Mancos Creative District’s first time organizing the Melt, and its leaders have planned the suitably artistic theme of “Burning Man.”

District director Sarah Syverson said the event will likely still include traditions such as the bed races. But the activities and costumes will be designed to reflect the Burning Man festival, in which artists from around the world construct a temporary city in the Nevada desert every summer.

Syverson said she and organizers are working on the details, and she expected to know more by the end of the month. But as always, it will be a family-friendly event that celebrates the coming of spring. The Mancos Melt is set for March 15-17.

“It’s a way to slough off the winter blues with a bunch of fun events,” Syverson said.

Other Mancos events scheduled for the upcoming weeks include:

The Spinning Wheels concert at Mancos Brewing Co. on Saturday. The four-piece Southwestern band will play at the brewery starting 6 p.m. Mancos Public Library’s next “Business in Your Backyard” event, to be held at Kilgore American Indian Art on Jan. 25. Kelly Kilgore will give a presentation on Native American art and her experiences in selling and trading it. The event is free and begins at 5 p.m.
