Mancos beats Southwest Classic winner Ignacio 63-40

Bluejays girls fall to Bobcats

The Ignacio High School girls and boys basketball teams also were in action Tuesday against league foe Mancos.

In the girls’ game, Mancos jumped out to an 8-0 lead, but Ignacio responded and led 9-8 after one quarter. Ignacio extended its lead to 24-15, but Mancos cut it to 24-20 at halftime. Four Mancos players fouled out in the second half, helping Ignacio win 66-51.

Avaleena Nanaeto led Ignacio with 15, which included a 3-pointer at the final buzzer. Laci Brunson added 13, Marissa Olguin scored 12, Harmony Reynolds scored 13, and Darlyn Mendoza-Lechuga added 12. Quincy Montoya led Mancos with 19, including 11 fourth-quarter points.Wayman Books scored 12, and Justina Bayles added 11.

In the boys’ game, Mancos beat Ignacio 63-40. MHS led 19-10 after the first, 35-22 at halftime and never looked back.

Gabe Tucson scored 15 to lead Ignacio. Eppie Quintana added 10, and Devante Montoya scored nine with a trio of 3-pointers.

Evan Sehnert and Connor Showalter both scored 16 for Mancos while Mason Goodwin and Edgar Hernandez both added 13.

On Saturday, Ignacio won the 2022 Four Corners Southwest Classic after beating both Montezuma-Cortez High School and Bayfield High School.
