Man found dead Monday morning in downtown Durango

Police say autopsy Thursday should determine cause of death

A man was found dead Monday morning in downtown Durango, believed to be a homeless person in his 60s, according to the Durango Police Department.

Cmdr. Ray Shupe said a La Plata County Sheriff’s Office deputy discovered the dead man around 10 a.m. just off the parking lot at the La Plata County Administration Building at 11th Street and East Second Avenue.

Authorities found identification on the man, but have not yet confirmed his identity or notified next of kin, Shupe said. It is likely the man won’t be identified until an autopsy is performed Thursday to determine the cause of death.

Shupe said there were no obvious signs of trauma or indicators of why the man died. Foul play is not suspected.

Shupe said the man is known to be among the homeless community in Durango.

The scene was cleared as of Monday afternoon, he said.
