Local, regional drivers shine at Fairgrounds Speedway

Kart Kanyon races close out exciting weekend of racing

CORTEZ – Big performances from drivers like Regan Tafoya, Shane DeVilbiss highlighted a busy weekend at Fairgrounds Speedway in Cortez.

Meantime, drivers also had a chance to shine during a Kart Kanyon performance on Saturday night in Aztec.

On Friday, Tafoya and DeVilbiss won their respective main events in both the modifieds and dwarf/modlite divisions at Fairgrounds Speedway. Tafoya took the checkered flag ahead of Julian Garcia Jr, Julian Garcia Sr and Tyler Wilson. DeVilbiss crossed the finish line in the dward/modlite main event on Friday, beating Rafe O’Brien, Ed Gilbert, Ross Ham and Gabe Shim.

Jason Duggins took the win in the Friday night Hobby Stocks feature, beating John Thomas, Hunter Ferrell, Chad Nelson and Kyler Duggins. The duo of Camron and Aaron Spangler finished first and second in the Northern Sportmod division with Camron getting the win followed by his father, Aaron, ahead of Rayce Green, Walyon Hale, and Alex Sutherlin.

Steffan Carey moved up seven positions midrace to claim the top spot in the Friday night Stock Cars finale, followed by Pete Terwilleger, Allen Bradley, Tony Hill and Darell Cordary.

A big win was picked up on Friday in the Youth Sport Compact class, as Jayden Smalls claimed the score, beating Alexis Lewis and Jaden Kibel. And Katie Barthel took the checkers in the Sport Compact division followed by Colton Peterson, Beau Hunter, Ted Neergaard and Abbi Barthel.

Dirt racing has busy weekend at Aztec Speedway

On Saturday, Tafoya and DeVilbiss again picked up right where they left off with victories in their divisions, while Jason Duggins also completed a winning weekend in the hobby stocks division. Duggins beat John Thomas, Chad Nelson, Kyler Duggins and Clint Adams to finish the weekend on a winning note.

Smalls also swept the weekend, picking up on Saturday right where he left off, winning the Youth Sport Compact feature followed by Alexis Lewis, Jaden Kibel and Martin Adams.

The Northern Sport Mods raced for added prize money with Camron Spangler getting out the broom for a weekend sweep followed by his father, Aaron Spangler. Waylon Hale, Rick Spangler and Rayce Green rounded out the top five performances.

Carey also picked up the sweep in the Stock Division followed by Allen Bradley, Darell Cordary, Tony Hill and Pete Terwilleger.

The Sport Compacts division saw a new winner Saturday night as Colton Peterson earned the win after Barthel was disqualified. Finishing second was Ted Neergaard, Abbi Barthel, Joy Bowen and Grants Hobbs.

Kasyn Mathews got the win in the Powri Micro Sprint division followed by Joshua Huish.

Fairgrounds Speedway will be back in action Friday and Saturday, July 7 and 8 for the Jim Henry Memorial.

Brayton Carley took the win in the Youth Red Plate Division followed by Brendan McLaughlin, Khloé Tenski, Wyatt Calcote, and Barrett Tenski.

In the the Youth Rookie class, Griffyn Bandy won the main event ahead of Alei Dineltsoi, Brodie Rector, Garrin Bandy and Caulin Horse.

Bana Higgins took the top spot in the Stock Division followed by Romon Saiz, Rivver Higgins, Justin Hogue and Jordan Hockenhull.

Kart Kanyon has big weekend on dirt track in Aztec

In the final event of the evening, the Super Stocks feature went to Mike Arnold, beating Bob Harter, Beau Blakley, Tim Connor and Jared Bandy.
