Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a house fire Sunday that left a Hermosa family displaced.

Karola Hanks, fire marshal for Durango Fire Protection District, said authorities received a report of a fire at a single-family residence at 150 Hermosa Meadow Roads around 1:04 a.m. Sunday.

Fire crews arrived around 1:19 a.m., Hanks said, and were able to deem the fire controlled by about 2:20 a.m.

A mother and her two children were home at the time, but no one was injured, Hanks said. The family is temporarily displaced and staying with relatives in Durango, she said.

“They’re all fine, although to go through a fire like this is fairly traumatic,” Hanks said.

Fire investigators believe the fire started in the attic, but are still working toward a cause. A strong storm moved through the region Saturday night into Sunday, but Hanks doesn’t believe a lightning strike started the fire. She did say, however, it could have impacted electrical items and perhaps caused some type of power surge.

“We’re working currently to eliminate causes in that area,” Hanks said.

Hanks said there was a “large loss” of value in the blaze, and the home will need a new roof, though she did not immediately have an estimated cost of loss.
