Ignacio wins Four Corners Southwest Classic

With the Ignacio boys basketball team beating Montezuma-Cortez and Bayfield beating Durango on Friday at the Four Corners Southwest Classic in Bayfield, the IHS and BHS match up on Saturday served as the de facto championship of the tournament this season.

The first half was close, with the teams tied 13-13 after the first quarter and Ignacio taking a slim 22-20 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, however, Ignacio’s Eppie Quintana scored the first eight points of the half and Ignacio didn’t allow Bayfied to score until the final minute to take a 41-25 lead into the fourth.

Isaac Ross of Bayfield rallied his team in the fourth quarter, scoring nine consecutive points to cut Ignacio’s lead to five, 47-42.

Ignacio, however, would finish strong, scoring the last nine points to extend its lead and finish on top of BHS, 56-42.

The win, combined with Ignacio’s 59-48 victory over Montezuma-Cortez, scored the Bobcats this year’s Four Corners Southwest Classic title.

Quintana scored 24 points to lead Ignacio while Gabe Tucson added 16.

Ross led Bayfield with 19.

Montezuma-Cortez beats Durango

In the day’s first game, Durango and Cortez squared off.

The Demons took a 34-33 lead into halftime and extended it to 54-48 with a late 8-0 run in the third.

In the fourth, Cortez started the quarter with a 11-1 run to take 59-55 lead. Lincoln Clay made some shots for Durango to tie the game at 59, but then Cortez pulled out ahead again.

With six seconds left in the game, the Demons trailed by 3, but Luke Wesley was at the line. Wesley made his first free throw to make it a one-basket game. He missed the second shot, but the ball bounced out of bounds and Durango kept possession. After in bounding the ball, DHS missed a shot, but Landon Roberts came flying in, snagged the rebound in mid-air and scored on a put back just before the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, however, Cortez capitalized from the free throw line and pulled away to win the game, 84-74.

J.T. Carver scored 32 points to lead Cortez while Maddox Bryant added 19.

Wesley led Durango’s offense with 26 points, scoring baskets from all over the court including a buzzer beater 3-pointer at the end of the third.

On Friday, Ignacio beat Montezuma-Cortez 59-48. The teams were tied 12-12 after the first quarter, but Ignacio knocked down five 3-pointers in the second to take a 29-21 lead into halftime.

Ignacio extended its lead to 43-33 in the third and eventually posted a double-digit win. Gabe Tucson and Phillip Quintana both scored 18 points to lead Ignacio. Devante Montoya and Dylan McCaw both chipped in eight.

For Cortez, J.T. Carver sank three 3s to finish with 17 points. Austin Wood added 10, Gabe Crowley scored seven, and Trinidad McDonnell and Miles Frost both scored six.

Durango also lost 52-51 to Bayfield on Friday.
