Head-on collision closes U.S. Highway 160 between Durango and Bayfield

Authorities responded to a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 160 between Durango and Bayfield.

Trooper Jeff Chmielewski, a spokesman with the Colorado State Patrol in Denver, said it appears a Toyota Corolla crossed the center line near mile maker 96, west of the Narrow Gauge Mobile Home Park, and struck a Ford pickup.

The call came in about 4:32 p.m., Chmielewski said.

The driver of the Toyota and a juvenile passenger were transported by ambulance to a hospital. The driver of the Ford did not require medical transport, Chmielewski said.

The highway was closed and traffic was diverted while authorities responded. The highway reopened around 6 p.m.

Chmielewski said the highway would be temporarily closed again around 6:30 p.m. while a tow truck removed the Ford pickup.

He did not have more information about the crash late Tuesday.
