I admired and respected Pope Francis.
However, I think it is a violation of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution for the President to order flags at government buildings to be lowered to half-mast in Pope Francis' honor.
The clear and firm boundary between church and state is a keystone of our democracy. The government cannot and should not tell us what to believe or how to worship. Churches, businesses, and individuals may lower their flags if they choose. But American flags at town halls, post offices, and libraries should not be lowered for a foreign religious leader.
This could be a slippery slope. Should flags be lowered at the passing of famous rabbis, Protestant ministers, Islamic imams, or Shinto priests?
I think this order is an unconstitutional mistake which should never be repeated.
