Durango police looking for two suspects wanted for theft and fraud

Suspects accused of stealing wallets, purchasing items at Walmart

The Durango Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man and a woman suspected of committing theft and fraud in the past few weeks.

According to a post on social media, DPD said two suspects stole a wallet from a woman’s purse about 2 p.m. April 26 at Albertsons in Durango, then immediately went to Walmart and used a credit card to buy $2,500 in merchandise and gift cards.

The next day, the man and the woman are suspected of stealing a wallet from someone in Cortez and again went to Walmart to buy items.

At the Cortez Walmart, a woman reported her credit card had been used at Walmart. She attempted to cancel her cards and was notified of a denied transaction at Walmart for over $2,300. Surveillance video of the attempted transaction showed a 40- to 50-year-old man and a 40- to 50-year-old woman attempting to purchase 21 gift cards and other items. The woman appeared to be holding multiple credit cards, Cortez police reported.

Footage from the Cortez City Market also showed the two suspects from Walmart, and another suspect, enter City Market and surround the victim when she turned her back. The new suspect appeared to reach into her basket and remove something. All three then quickly left the store, police said.

DPD said the suspects may be traveling in a silver SUV. Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call Detective Terry Brookins at 375-4732.
