Dolores golfers finish second in Shiprock Tournament

Lady Bears finish second on windy New Mexico course

Undeterred by the wind and focused on the task at hand, the Dolores High School girls golf team performed impressively at the Shiprock High School Tournament at Riverview Golf Course on April 2 and finished second overall.

Leading the way for Dolores was Kiara Lingenfelter, whose ability to control the ball and sink putts was evident throughout her round, which ended with a score of 98.

Also turning in a solid performance was Dimery Plewe, who navigated the windy course on her way to a score of 100. Plewe’s result was impressive in light of the fact that she underwent knee surgery to repair her ACL and Meniscus one year ago.

Other top scorers for the Lady Bears included Kailey Case, who fired a career-best score of 112, first-year golfer Brianna Dennison, who shot a 134, and Kali Partington, who shot a 136.

Dolores finished with a combined team score of 444 overall, which was good enough for second place, just ahead of Aztec High School, which shot a combined total of 446. Piedra Vista High School won the eight-team tournament with a combined score of 367. After the event, Dolores head coach Monica Plewe praised her team’s performance.

“I’m so proud of my girls, especially for their integrity on the course,” Plewe wrote, in an email to The Journal.

Plewe also noted that the Dolores High School girls golf program is now six years old and has had at least one state qualifier in each year of its existence. While several factors have contributed to the team’s success, Plewe noted that hard work by players and coaches have been the biggest keys.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to Micah (Rudosky), Jeff Carr, and Shay Sena,” Plewe wrote. “They have already done chipping and putting instruction with the girls, and assistant coaches Holly Kilburn and Jason Witt have been a huge help as well.”

Next up for the Dolores girls golf team will be a tournament at Hillcrest Golf Course in Durango on April 16, which will be followed by the team’s home tournament at Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez on April 17.
