Dawg Fight provides early wrestling showcase

Mancos collects six top placers; Dolores earns one

DOVE CREEK – In one of the biggest tournaments of the year in Four Corners wrestling, the Dawg Fight – hosted by Dove Creek – brought out the region's best for an early season test.

At the day’s end, six Mancos wrestlers stood atop the podium in their respective weight classes, and numerous other Dolores and Dove Creek wrestlers posted high finishes.

In the 106 pounds division, Mancos sophomore Dillon Eichner (8-4) blitzed through the competition, posting five pins to win the division 5-0.

At 113, pounds Mancos junior Isaiah Martinez (9-0) continued a torrid start to his season, winning all three of his matches, including a back-and-forth match against Dove Creek junior Jessy Gore (3-4), to take the top spot in his weight. Gore took third at 113, to finish as one of the top placers for the host Bulldogs.

Continuing the Jays’ dominance in the smaller weight divisions, senior Trevor Paquin (6-4) win the title at 126 pounds, collecting a 3-0 record in the process, while sophomore teammate and state champion Levi Martin (12-0) went 5-0 in the 132 pounds division.

Bluejays junior Ayden Mathews (12-0) continued an unbeaten start to his season, taking all five of his matches at 160 pounds.

Lane Greenlee (10-2) rounded out the division winners for the Jays, taking the top spot in the 182 class. The junior won all five of his matches, all via pin.

Mancos' Cole Dainty-Guilfoyle (10-3) took third at 170, while Bluejays sophomore Ethan Oster (6-5) finished in third at 138.

Dolores enjoyed a solid day on the mat, which included an individual title for junior Ethen Robson (2-0), who posted a pair of wins at 195 to take the top spot in the division.

Bear junior Braden Schmittel posted a 2-3 mark on the day to take third in the 160 weight division, while senior Gabe Allred (3-2) took third in the 182 class.

Dove Creek sophomore Tyson Beanland (7-4) headlined the Bulldog efforts, taking third place in the 152 class, picking up a record of 3-2 on the day.

Several area teams will see one more big test before the holiday break, as John Mall High School in Walsenburg hosts a large invitational to cap off the 2021 portion of the schedule, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 17-18.
