Cortez now accepting Type 1 and Type 2 plastic for recycling

For The Journal

Plastic will now be accepted as part of the city of Cortez’s Residential Recycling Program.

A separate trash bin has been placed at the City Service Center in the Industrial Park for plastic. Other bins are for cardboard, mixed paper, mixed glass, tin cans, and aluminum cans. All recycling products need to be separated into the appropriate bins.

To recycle plastic:

Check the label. Make sure that the bottle is clearly labeled with one of these symbols before recycling.

Rinse all plastic bottles so they are free of contaminants.

Remove all lids. Lids are generally a Type 5 plastic and not allowed in this plastic recycling program.

Examples of Type 1 and Type 2 plastics:

Milk bottles (1-gallon, ½-gallon)

Water bottles (8 ounces to 2 gallons)

Fruit juice bottles

Laundry and fabric softener containers

Bleach bottles

Windshield solvent bottles

Soda bottles (1-3 liters
