The Turquoise Raven Art Gallery, 104 E. Main St., is hosting an art show titled “When Do I Stop?” featuring works by local artists through Saturday, May 30.
The exhibit includes original glasswork; collage; oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings; and textile and multimedia pieces. Artwork is available for purchase.
Mary Fuller, Turquoise Raven Art Gallery owner, artist and former teacher, said she created the show based on lifelong observations about the art of stopping. She shared that she’s often wondered how to decide when it’s time to end certain experiences, activities, thoughts and behaviors, ultimately coming to the conclusion that while some things should stop, other things are meant to last forever.
“‘When Do I Stop?’ came about because, over my lifetime, I noticed that there were many, many experiences and activities, thoughts and behaviors that required me to have to decide to stop,” she said. “I’m sure the psychology of this could keep someone busy. Some things should be stopped and some things should never stop – it’s part of navigating life. I think it is wonderful that we have people, places, experiences and things in our lives that we want to hold on to forever ... the opposite is unthinkable.”
Some of the highlighted artwork that will be available at the gallery include the mixed-media collage “Loving Frida” by Susan Reed. The piece honors the honesty of Frida Kahlo’s life and art.
“I appreciate her honesty, her ability to display her angst, sadness and frustrations in her work and still find the time to cater to a man who was not always aware of her,” Reed said. “I believe she saw the importance of this great artistic ability, and the creative way she expressed her own dissatisfaction with inequality in the lives of the masses. (She had) a difficult love affair, a difficult life, which she portrayed quite accurately … and it would not be until much later that her own worth would be celebrated.”
Others included Jeanne Cain’s acrylic painting “Life in the Balance” which showcases “grounding” and “calm” through rock and water imagery and “The Paint Shirt” contributed by Fuller. This piece was created by stitching stained pieces of old work shirts together.
The Turquoise Raven Art Gallery curates fine art from the Four Corners and Mesa Verde region, offering museum-quality works, gifts, supplies and more. It also hosts public classes taught by professional artists.
Exhibits at the gallery rotate each month. The next, “Rock Stars of the 60s, 70s and 80s,” will run from June 4 to 27. The submission deadline is May 30. Details can be found online at www.turquoiseravenartgallery.com.
The hours of the gallery are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, contact Fuller at (970) 529-3597 or turquoiseravenart@gmail.com.
